Netanyahu Nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize Amid Ongoing Controversy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, praising his efforts in promoting peace in the Middle East. The nomination was presented during a meeting at the White House, where the two leaders discussed current issues in the region. Netanyahu highlighted Trump’s role in the Abraham Accords, which helped normalize relations between Israel and several Arab countries.

However, the nomination has sparked controversy. Many critics pointed out that it comes while Israel continues its military operations in Gaza, where over 57,000 Palestinians have been killed. Human rights groups have accused Israel of committing war crimes and collective punishment in the region. In May 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant for allegedly blocking access to food, water, medicine, and electricity in Gaza.

Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize before by his supporters and has often complained about not receiving the award. He believes his efforts in easing tensions between countries like India and Pakistan, and Serbia and Kosovo, should have earned him the honor. In 2019, there were also reports that Pakistan considered nominating Trump, but the idea faced backlash after the U.S. supported Israeli strikes on Iran, and the plan was never officially submitted.

Both Trump and Netanyahu are currently seeking political advantages. Trump is campaigning for the upcoming U.S. presidential election in November, while Netanyahu faces global criticism for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Despite the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, Trump continues to claim he supports world peace and has promised to end the Ukraine war “within 24 hours” if re-elected.
