Petroleum Product Sales Rise 7% in FY25 Amid Price Cuts, Demand Surge

KARACHI: Pakistan’s petroleum sector recorded a 7% year-on-year growth in sales during FY25, reaching 16.32 million tonnes, up from 15.28 million tonnes in FY24, official data revealed. The increase was mainly driven by higher consumption of motor gasoline (MS) and high-speed diesel (HSD), despite a decline in furnace oil (FO) sales.

In June alone, petroleum product sales rose 8% year-on-year and 2% month-on-month, totaling 1.57 million tonnes. This growth was spurred by expectations of a price hike due to global oil tensions and higher electricity grid demand. MS sales surged 5% MoM to 0.73 million tonnes — the highest in 36 months — while FO sales jumped 62% YoY. HSD sales, however, dropped 8% MoM following the end of the harvesting season.

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) benefited from reduced MS and HSD prices, fewer smuggled Iranian products, and a pickup in automobile sales. Pakistan State Oil (PSO) led the market with 661,000 tonnes sold in June, up 2% YoY. Its MS market share rose to 43.3%, helping lift its overall market share to 42.2%. Wafi Energy posted a strong 19% YoY rise, while Attock Petroleum’s sales rose slightly by 2% YoY but dipped 4% MoM. HASCOL’s sales improved 15% YoY but fell 19% from May.
