Fluminense Edge Past Al Hilal 2-1 to Reach Club World Cup Semis

Fluminense advanced to the Club World Cup semi-finals after a 2-1 win over Al Hilal on Friday in Orlando. Brazilian substitute Hercules scored the winning goal in the 70th minute, sealing the victory in front of a crowd of over 43,000. Earlier, Matheus Martinelli had put Fluminense ahead in the 40th minute, but Al Hilal equalized early in the second half through Marcos Leonardo.

The first half saw limited chances until Martinelli found space in the box and fired a strong left-footed shot past goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Al Hilal nearly responded quickly, with Kalidou Koulibaly forcing a great save from Fluminense’s 44-year-old keeper Fabio. Al Hilal were briefly awarded a penalty, but the decision was overturned after a video review showed no contact.

Al Hilal fought hard in the second half and managed to level the score when Koulibaly headed a corner to Leonardo, who tapped it in. But a defensive error later allowed Hercules to find the net after a blocked shot and a quick setup by teammate Samuel, giving Fluminense a 2-1 lead that held until the final whistle despite heavy pressure from Al Hilal.

Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho praised his team’s effort and highlighted the leadership of veteran defender Thiago Silva. Meanwhile, Al Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi said his side deserved more from the game, calling the match close and decided by small moments. Despite the loss, Al Hilal earned respect with strong performances throughout the tournament.
