Jurassic World: Rebirth' Director Says Audiences Are Losing Interest in Dinosaur Films

Gareth Edwards, the director of Jurassic World: Rebirth, recently shared surprising thoughts about the future of dinosaur movies. While speaking to GamesRadar+ during a promotional interview, he admitted that audiences may not be as excited about dinosaurs as they used to be.

He explained that since there have already been many dinosaur-themed films, especially in the Jurassic franchise, filmmakers need to offer something fresh to keep viewers interested. “At the start, we openly said audiences might not be into dinosaurs anymore — that felt like an honest way to begin and build the story from there,” Edwards noted.

Despite his comments, the film had a strong opening. It made $30.5 million on its first day in U.S. cinemas and is expected to earn around $133.5 million in its first five days. The movie stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, who helps a shipwrecked family uncover a mysterious island’s secrets, with help from her team.

In an earlier interview with Variety, Edwards compared his movie to the original Jurassic Park from 1993. He called the original “a horror movie in disguise” and recalled being terrified by the famous T. rex scene as a child. He added that directing a new installment in such a beloved franchise was a major challenge due to the high expectations set by the classic film.
